Aftercare Guide

Essential Tips for a Smooth Healing Process

Caring for your new piercing is essential to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. At Pleasurable Piercings, we prioritize a simple, body-friendly approach that lets your body do its natural healing work. Follow this guide to keep your piercing healthy, beautiful, and trouble-free.

Caring for Body Piercings

  • Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing to avoid introducing bacteria.
  • Saline Rinse: Clean your piercing with sterile, packaged saline (with no additives) at least once a day. Spray the saline to remove any crusted fluid ("crusties") and wipe gently with non-woven gauze soaked in saline. Avoid using harsh chemicals, soaps, or ointments as these can irritate the piercing and slow healing.
  • Shower Rinse: During your shower, let the water run over the piercing to loosen any buildup. Afterward, perform a saline rinse to ensure cleanliness.
  • Dry Carefully: Pat the area dry with clean, disposable paper products or non-woven gauze. Avoid using cloth towels as they can harbor bacteria.

Caring for Oral Piercings

  • Rinse Regularly: Rinse your mouth with bottled water after eating, drinking, or smoking.
  • Avoid Certain Foods: Stay away from spicy, salty, acidic, and hot foods for the first few days. Cold foods and beverages can help reduce swelling.
  • Daily Hygiene: Brush your teeth after meals using a new toothbrush and avoid whitening toothpaste.
  • Check-Up: Return to the studio if you have concerns about your healing. Consult with your piercer when it's time to downsize your jewelry.

Tips for Better Healing

  • Healthy Lifestyle: A nutritious diet, adequate sleep, and good overall health can greatly aid the healing process. Exercise is fine, but listen to your body and avoid trauma to the pierced area.
  • Clean Environment: Keep your bedding and clothes clean. Showering is safer than bathing, as bathtubs can harbor bacteria.
  • Avoid Sleeping on Piercings: For ear piercings, a travel pillow can help you avoid sleeping directly on the piercing.
  • Avoid Trauma and Irritation: Avoid playing with your jewelry, and be cautious of clothing, headphones, and anything that might snag or put pressure on the piercing.

What to Avoid

  • Do Not Touch: Avoid unnecessary touching or playing with your piercing. This can lead to irritation or infection
  • Avoid Harsh Products: Do not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Betadine, oils, or ointments. Avoid submerging the piercing in lakes, pools, jacuzzis, or oceans.
  • Limit Beauty Products: Keep cosmetics, lotions, sprays, and other beauty products away from your piercing.
  • Jewelry Removal: Keep your jewelry in at all times, even if the piercing is healed. Removing jewelry too soon can cause the piercing to shrink or close. If you need to remove jewelry temporarily for medical reasons, contact your piercer for advice on non-metal alternatives.

Jewelry Maintenance Tips

  • Check Tightness: Regularly check that threaded ends on your jewelry are secure. Follow the “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” rule.
  • Handling Your Jewelry: Use sterile bandages to wrap tools when handling jewelry to prevent scratches or damage.
  • Gemstone Care: If you have gemstones, avoid exposing them to makeup or crusty discharge to maintain their shine. Clean them using appropriate methods; contact us if you're unsure about how to care for your specific jewelry.
  • Clean Accessories: Keep items like phones, glasses, and headphones clean if they come into contact with your piercing.
  • Avoid Shared Tools: Never share jewelry or tools, such as insertion tapers, as this can spread infections.
